Freshfields names winner of Polish legal prize.
International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has announced the winner of the Freshfields dr Janusz Kochanowski legal prize run jointly with the Ius et Lex Foundation, based in Warsaw, Poland. The prize is a six-week placement at one of the firm's offices in London, Paris, Vienna or Berlin. It follows a competition open to third, fourth and fifth year students studying in Poland.
Freshfields corporate partner Tim Jones said: 'Poland is a strategically important country for the firm as our clients are increasingly recognising its potential as a key growth market. We are pleased to be working with Ius et Lex to offer a talented Polish student the opportunity to undertake an internship in one of our offices. We hope the placement will provide insight into what life at an international law firm is like and prove useful experience for the winner's future career.'
Marta Kochanowska, the Foundations' President, who trained and worked at Freshfields' corporate department said: "I believe that an internship at Freshfields is a fitting tribute to my father's work and memory. The competition's winner will have a unique opportunity to work in one of the best legal environments."
Students were asked to submit a written paper on a recent legislative development in Poland. Ten applicants were then selected to take part in an assessment day involving a practical exercise and an interview.
A judging panel consisted of Freshfields partners Tim Jones and Willibald Plesser, as well as Tomasz Wardynski (Wardynski & Partners), Marcin Warchol (Warsaw University), Michal Skup (Head of Legal at MAKRO Cash and Carry) and Marta Kochanowska (President of Ius et Lex).
The placement with Freshfields will take place between 1.7. and 10.8.2012 at one of the European offices of the winner's choice.
Founded in 2000 by dr Janusz MKochanowski, Ius et Lex Foundation provides support for and promotes educational initiatives involving Polish law. It also aims to adapt the Polish legal system to European standards.
